摘要:In evaluating the syntax of five temporal adverbs, it is observed that “dondon,” “dandan,” “sidaini,” and “jyojyoni” are only used to describe limited time situations whereas “masumasu” does not have this restriction. The aforementioned four adverbs must be used with predicates that exhibit movement, while “masumasu” can be used with either predicates that describe movement or condition. All five adverbs are primarily used to depict the progress of a situation that has already been completed. “Dandan” emphasizes what happens after change occurs, and conversely “dondon” highlights what happens before. “Dondon” is more frequently used than the other four adverbs to express a quantitative change; “dandan” and “masumasu” are more commonly used to convey a qualitative change. We deduce from the results of this study that “masumasu” is the most wide-ranging of the five adverbs.
